Several hundred people gathered to hold simultaneous protests in the southern Algerian cities of Ouargla, Tamanrasset, Adrar, In Salah, Aoulef, and Djelfa, on 17 January in opposition to shale gas extraction.
The protests have focused on acts of civil disobedience including the blocking of roads and access to state buildings, and are likely to remain largely peaceful. Focused mainly on environmental concerns over the impact of shale extraction on local water tables, the protests have been organised by the National Committee for the Defence of the Rights of the Unemployed (CNDDC), and include demands for increased job opportunities, and grievances over land rights.
