Saudi Arabia and its allies have launched a military operation against Ansar Allah, the Yemeni Zaidi group popularly known as the Houthis, at the request of Yemen's beleaguered President Abd Rabbu Mansur Hadi, the kingdom announced on 26 March.

In a statement released in the name of Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Bahrain, Qatar, and Kuwait, it cited the regional threat presented by Ansar Allah, saying it had "heavy weapons, and long and short range missiles" and had revealed its aggressive intentions by building up its forces on its border with the kingdom and carrying out a live-fire exercise.
In an apparent reference to Iran, the statement also described Ansar Allah as a "tool in the hands of foreign powers".
The kingdom subsequently said that Jordan, Sudan, Morocco, Egypt, and Pakistan had also announced their willingness to participate in Operation 'Decisive Storm'. Egypt released a statement saying it was consulting with the Gulf Arab states about the participation of its air, naval and, if necessary, ground forces.
The kingdom subsequently announced that the first air strikes had resulted in the "destruction of all Houthi air defences" at Al-Dailami base next to Sanaa International Airport. It said that four Yemeni military aircraft had also been destroyed, with no losses to Royal Saudi Air Force (RSLF).
The United States announced on the same day that it would provide logistical and intelligence support for the operation.
